Photographer shares posing tips for couples. Northern Virginia bride and groom embrace with groom facing away from the camera

If the thought of posing for photos instantly makes you nervous, you’re not alone. One of the first things I hear from most couples is, “We’re so awkward in front of the camera.” And let me just say that’s totally normal and absolutely okay. You don’t have to be a model or know your angles to have beautiful, authentic photos. In fact, some of the most heartfelt and joy-filled images I’ve captured have come from couples who claimed they were the “least photogenic people ever.” As a photographer, it’s my job to help you feel confident and comfortable throughout your session. I believe your experience is just as important as the final images. So, here are some posing tips for couples I’ve learned along the way!

First, let’s talk about the power of movement. Standing still and smiling can feel stiff, especially if you’re not used to being photographed. However, when I encourage you to walk hand in hand, sway together, or give each other a playful spin, everything shifts. Movement allows you to focus less on posing and more on simply being with your person. It breaks the ice, helps you loosen up, and often leads to natural laughter and genuine connection. Plus, the resulting photos are full of life and energy which is exactly what we’re going for.

Another key to feeling less awkward in front of the camera is focusing on your partner instead of me. You don’t have to stare into the lens the whole time. In fact, I’ll usually guide you not to. Some of the most emotional and authentic moments happen when you’re interacting with each other. Whether it’s whispering a silly inside joke, sneaking a kiss on the cheek, or simply sharing a quiet look, these moments are where your relationship shines through. I’ll guide you by sharing things you can do with each other that make for the best photos.

Next, let’s talk about hands because most people have no idea what to do with them. That’s where intentional touch comes in. I’ll guide you to create natural “connection points” that make your poses feel effortless. Think about tucking your hand into their arm, gently brushing a strand of hair behind their ear, or holding each other’s hands softly. These little touches help your bodies look connected and relaxed and they also create emotional warmth in the images.

I always remind my couples that I’m there to guide every step of the way. You’ll never be left wondering what to do or feeling unsure. I give clear, friendly direction and gentle prompts that are designed to make you feel like yourselves. Over the years, I’ve learned these posing tips for couples and I am not afraid to use them! Sometimes that means helping you get into the right lighting or position, and other times it’s as simple as saying, “Okay, now just look at each other and pretend you’re on your first date again.” It’s fun, low-pressure, and all about helping you feel supported.

Finally, remember that confidence comes with time. You don’t have to nail it in the first five minutes. That’s why I design my sessions to start slow and build as we go. By the end, most couples are laughing, twirling, and even suggesting their own poses. What felt intimidating at the start becomes fun and exciting.

So if you’re worried about feeling awkward in front of the camera, know that you’re not alone. And you’re not doomed to stiff, uncomfortable photos. With the right guidance, a relaxed atmosphere, and a photographer who’s cheering you on, your session can be a beautiful reflection of your relationship.

Your love story deserves to be captured honestly, joyfully, and with zero pressure to be anything but yourselves. And I’ll be right there every step of the way to make sure it is. Hope you enjoyed these posing tips for couples.

If you’re ready to schedule those engagement photos I would love to be your DC photographer! Let’s discuss the details.
